Warrenton/Washington Irish Round Robin

We just got some of the details for the round robin that Warrenton is hosting this Saturday (4/26). The format that the teams have agreed on is to play A-Sides in the first half and then sub in their entire reserve/B-Side in the second half. West Pot will have the first match at noon against Warrenton and then play the Irish after they and Warrenton square off. This gives us a nice little break in the middle but means we have to get on the road early.

Here is the info for the two carpool loactions — each one will have a 9:00 meet time and 9:30 wheels up. Make sure you let Bible and/or Sideshow know how you plan on getting out there so that nobody gets left behind with Kirk Cameron.

DC MEET-UP
Dunkin' Donuts @ 8th and Penn. Ave. SE
(Eastern Market Metro Stop)

ARLINGTON, VA MEET-UP
1000 Randolph St.
(Intersection of N Fairfax and N Randolph St. — near Ballston Metro stop)

Warrenton's pitch is at the Great Meadow in The Plains, VA (near Old Tavern). I am not making any of this up, apparently everything outside of the Beltway was named by A. A. Milne. Anyway, here are directions:

5089 Old Tavern Rd, The Plains, VA 2019 (this gets you to bullet 3 below)
  • Take I-66 west to exit 31 (Rte 245, The Plains, Old Tavern)
  • Go left (south) on 245 for about 3 miles.
  • In Old Tavern enter Great Meadow main gate on the left.
  • Go right immediately and follow the “Rugby” signs

Title Defense

Both us and Suburbs honked out of the first round of the MARFU playoffs last weekend so we put together a friendly rematch of last Fall's PRU D3 championship game for today. The game was played at Suburb's alternate pitch in the front yard of one of their old boys out in Loudon county. We played 3 30 minute chuckers with open subs. The game was kind of sloppy but we managed to squeeze out a 5 point win.

More details later.

Thursday Night Practice: 7pm

The weather today is perfect for rugby practice under the lights at Benning-Stoddard. We had very light numbers on Tuesday, but we need a big turnout tonight. We are playing our biggest rival this weekend and the last thing I want to do is drop another game, especially to Suburbs.

Just because we beat Suburbs in the PRU championship last fall does not erase the two losses we suffered to them in 2006. Come out to practice, get a good run in, and get ready to play Suburbs.

The Triple P may be making an appearance this weekend and not as a ref. If beating Suburbs can't amp you up for practice, than Podo the Punishing Pole should.

Derby Time

Hey, its that time again . . .
mint juleps, chicks in big hats, and the occasional horse

I'm hitting up the kentucky derby again this year. Its May 3rd, we are talking about heading out Friday afternoon and coming back Sunday. The tickets are only $40 for the actual derby. There are a few cheap hotels left and I have my sister who has an apartment down there. We also meet some girls last year that invited us to a pre-party friday night that I am definitely going to hit up. Any of you thundercats interested?

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

Cock-Ring e-mailed me and wanted to know how to post to the blog.  Rather than getting all paternal and having him e-mail me stuff to post, I figured it would be easier to just give him the new posting e-mail and take down anything that was too over the edge.  It will be interesting to see what ends up on here; if you see anything that's libelous or whatever, post a comment or send me an e-mail.

Saturday's a (Playoff) Rugby Day!

Gentlemen,

We have confirmation for everything this Saturday and the details are as follows:

- We will hear about the fields by 8:30 at the latest and I will update the blog & website with the final location. If you are not going to be around a computer, you can give me (202.669.4617) or Bible (216.346.9155) a call to confirm.

- If the weather permits, we will be at Signal Hill Park in Manassas, VA. Kick-off will be at 1:30 and we will need rookies to the pitch by 10:00 for field set-up. Everyone else should be there and kitted up by noon.

- If weather does not cooperate we are playing in Harrisburg. Kick-off will be at 3:00 and we will have a carpool leaving from Dunkin' Donuts at 11:00. I will post directions to the pitch as soon as I have them, but plan for 2 - 2.5 hours to get there from DC.

See everyone at practice this evening,

Sideshow

Details for Saturday's Match

Gentlemen,

Sorry I have not sent out the details for this Saturday, but we are still finalizing our weather contingency plans in case we get rained off the field on Saturday.

If the weather holds out for us, we will be kicking off at 1:00 at Signal Hill Park in Manassas, VA (Suburbs' pitch). The info has already been posted on the blog and appears below again.

Because this is a MARFU playoff match, we are bound to their guidelines for rain-outs so the options would be:

1. Harrisburg has the option of hosting the match on Saturday
2. If the match cannot be moved to their location, we will host on Sunday

We are still waiting to hear back from Harrisburg about what they want to do and will let everyone know ASAP so that they can plan accordingly. In all honesty, it is only a 2 hour drive to PA so that option is not outrageous (we would move the start time back to 3:00).

In the meantime, don't get distracted by the when's and where's. The bottom line is that you are playing rugby this weekend and we need to win to advance.

More details to follow...

The Old Boys

The last few weeks have seen a few more Old Boys rolling their old bones out to train, play on Saturdays, and support us in our bid to win MARFU.  As one of the oldest active players on the team, it's great to see familiar faces like Matt Johnston, Marco Salgado, and Andy Vonada out running around with us again.  Some these guys coming out of the woodwork now were the players that made up the bedrock of West Potomac RFC when I was a rookie all those years ago.  Without exception these Old Boys that are coming out to support YOU are great guys, great ruggers, and good people to know personally and professionally.  So when you rookies and guys that are still new to the team see an unfamiliar grey-beard out, make a point of going up and introducing yourself.

Big week.

Gentlemen,

This is a big week -- we have a playoff game against Harrisburg this weekend and will need all hands out at practice this week. I was VERY happy with the turn-out this weekend against Pax River: 31 different players took the field for West Pot! Now let's see if we can get those numbers out to training so that we can scrum and run against opposition.

Speaking of this weekend, I will try to write up a match report tonight or tomorrow but the a-side final was 51-0.

Marvin's first half try helped the b-side avoid a shut out while they played very well against what was mostly Pax River's starting side. Ben wore The Jacket for an all-around solid match on both sides of the ball where he did so many of the little things that it takes for a team to win as it gets ready to take on tougher opponents.

See everyone out at practice this week!

Win at Pax River Strangely Unsatisfying

I guess it's an indication of just how far we've come as a team that yesterday's 51-0 beatdown was a bit of a letdown.

Alabama Sam had a typical monster game and even though I dotted one down myself (meaning that Skittles and his ridiculous orange boots have been outscored by me this season), our pack didn't display the type of dominance we need to show the week before the first round of MARFU.

Even more disappointing was our timing in the backline. With Brent and the Cuban at the centers I expected them to have a field day, but we couldn't seem to really hit a good crash and I believe the only score that they had came on a busted play.

The lone bright spot of the day was the play of our wings and fullback. They caught and countered kicks brilliantly, ran hard, and made some nice passes to each other as well. FireDog is still learning the game, but he's cutting down on his mistakes and playing some pretty good rugby.

Pax River this weekend!

We have a match(es) against Pax River this weekend at their home pitch at Mill Creek Middle School in beautiful Lusby, MD. The first match will kick-off at 1:00, which means that we will want everyone out there by 11:30 at the latest. We will definitely be running a second match, so please make every effort to be there so that we can get a full 15/15.

We will be organizing a carpool leaving from the Dunkin' Donuts on Penn. Ave. and 8th Street SE (Eastern Market Metro). Plan on meeting around 9:00/9:15; wheels up at 9:45. Make sure you let some one know if you are carpooling so nobody gets left behind with Kirk Cameron.

Four Leaf Fifteens Wrap-Up

After getting to the hostel at about 11pm on Friday night, we dropped off our stuff and immediately headed to the Ding Dong Lounge.  A few dozen PBRs and two hours later we headed back to crash.

West Potomac traveled up to NYC with only 16 players but managed to put in a half decent showing on the field.  Pretty much everyone made it to Randall's Island by 8:30 for our 9:30 kick off against Jersey Shore B; it was cold, windy, and dry all day long.  JSB got on the board first and that seemed to knock some sense into us.  The first try was a penalty try awarded to the Skip, flagrant dirt right in front of the posts.  Shortly after we realized that neither of their wings or their fullback could catch anything, so we started putting pressure on with kicks and that lead to Ron getting the second try and finally Sharp got off the schneid with a beautiful score off "The Wall" on a penalty play.  It was like lightning struck, Skittles went in completely untouched!  Bible converted all three kicks.  Final Score 21-5

Second game was against the Syracuse Chargers, they laid the wood on JSB after us, something like 38-0 so we knew we had a tough game coming up.  The refereeing in the second game was horrible!!  I think the flyhalf was the ref's illegitimate son or something, he was drawing high tackle penalties all game and there was also the matter of Syracuse's #8 just launching himself into a ruck.  The most egregious call of the game was when MJ & I were driving a maul inside the five meter line and they just cut my legs out from under me, not only did the ref not call a penalty, he also gave Syracuse the ball!  The final score of 25-0 doesn't really indicate how the game went, because in addition to the dreadful calls outlined above, the ref also didn't call two tries that we put down.

We missed out on the playoff round due to point differential, but that allowed us to watch a few games and then see the Beard whore himself out to a new team from Brooklyn.
