The gentlemen of West Potomac opened up the 2008 Fall season with a 55-5 victory over Chambersburg Saturday. Chambersburg fielded a much improved team from last season but were unable to stop the West Pot onslaught. Leading the effort in his first match in a Pabst jersey was scrumhalf Michael. The newly anointed number 9 impressed both teams by his excellent play and three tries, earning man of the match honors.
In a day filled with outstanding rookie performances, James Church also stood out with two tries and improved second half defensive play. Rounding out the A-side tries were Sideshow with two, Sunshine with one, and Virgil with one. Bible was 5-for-9 on conversion kicks.
Our overall play was solid but started to become sloppy as fatigue became apparent in the latter part of both halves. West Pot committed many ball handling errors amid the sweaty conditions under the hot Pennsylvanian sun. The front row of Ben, Dain, Koz, and second half sub Raymond merits recognition for adapting well against the opposing pack and forcing two turnovers by wheeling the scrum.
B-Side
The B-side played a spirited match and demonstrated their ability to work well as a cohesive unit. The play of the match was Trevor Travis Trent Todd Tucker Tyler's first try in his first ever rugby match. Josh displayed the speed we've come to know him for with a try while single handily absorbing every illegal tackle on the field. The Fearsome Beard was a tackling machine, and more than once was involved in tackling consecutive phases.
B-side man of the match honors were bestowed on Ben for his efforts playing for the other team. Ben displayed all the rage of a former Lehman employee while acting as prop, scrumhalf, coach, and cheerleader simultaneously.
