I've been following this for a while, and its the most fascinating piece of machinery in the world. On Wednesday, the Large Hadron Collider will circulate the first beam through its 17 mile long ring beneath the French/Swiss border. For the unscientific, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a massive 6 billion dollar particle accelerator. Its first purpose is to find what gives particles mass...why do the atoms that make us have substance in the first place?
Its second purpose is to destroy the world. There have been numerous lawsuits trying to stop the L.H.C. from being turned on due to the fact that it may create micro black holes and swallow the earth, bla bla bla. While it certainly may create micro black holes, the same principal that allows the black holes to be created causes them to evaporate nearly instantly...so practice will still be on Thursday.
Fun Fact: the LHC is now one of the coldest known places in the universe. Its magnets are cooled by 130 tons of liquid helium to 1.9 Kelvin (-456F).
