Fellas,
Just to follow up on what coach said last night about the banquet. We’re one of the oldest teams in DC (only Washington RFC is older) and part of the strength of our club is our sense of, and reverence for, history. The banquet is one of the times during the year where we have time to reflect on our history and forge bonds with older team members who helped make this team what it is today.
If I sound like a sentimental old fart, it’s probably because I am. With each passing year our connection to the origin of our club grows more and more tenuous and that’s OK, but we can not allow that connection to break. Each and every one of us has a responsibility to those who came before us and those who will come after us to keep history and traditions of West Potomac RFC née SAIS Rugby alive.
If you don’t know who Smitty and Kinsey are, Chuckles and Bam-Bam, Sully and Jesus (this list is by no means complete); the banquet is the time to meet and get to know these great guys. For you newer guys on the team, how many of you know about the “Fat Run” or why we celebrate Bastille Day on West Potomac or exactly what it is that our Governor Mike Graul does for us? The banquet is the time to find out about the legend and lore of the club you now belong to.
With You,
KJ
PS - In response to an e-mail I sent with this same speech in it, Matt Johnston was kind enough to provide me with the 20 year old photo see below.
